Universal Pictures is moving forward with a reboot of "The Mummy" franchise and has hired Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, The Darkest Hour) to write the script. Sean Daniel, who produced all three "Mummy" films and "The Scorpion King," will return.

Story details are being kept a secret, but Spaihts hinted: "I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with 'Prometheus': to go back to a franchise's roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven't seen before."

Brendan Fraser's 1999 movie "The Mummy" grossed $415 million worldwide and was outperformed by its 2001 sequel "The Mummy Returns," which took in $433 million globally. The 2002 "Scorpion King" spin-off only grossed $165 million. But when Fraser return for "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," the 2008 film grossed $401 million, indicating that there was still plenty of interest left in the franchise.

are they insane? a reboot already?! it hasn't been that long since the 3rd was released.

why not a sequel, if not with the original cast but continuing the story with a new cast?

I know what you mean Cyborg. Hollywood either doesn't want to risk an unknown property or they simply don't know what to do anymore.

I have a theory though. Yes money is always the answer but let's say that is only part of the problem. The "creative" minds currently at Hollywood grew up with all these amazing films through the 60's to 90's, ask yourself this question. What is left? What can be made original and new without looking through any source material? All that's left is adaptations, remakes and reboots with new angles and different point of views. A huge ego trip too.

Recently I have been watching Star Trek TOS properly for the first time. It has so far been an eye opener, I knew this already but you realize that we have reached the end of what films are capable of. We need a new medium that can possibly ignite creativity. It's interesting that Back to The Future predicted this will happen.

We are definitely in the dark age of cinema people. :ugeek:

our first look -

not a complete reboot of the 1999 version, a new story and new characters.
also is set in modern times unlike the 99 one and its sequels.

I can't believe they've done a remake/reboot of The Mummy. What's to improve on, and so soon? Tom Cruise? I don't think so ...

saw it today, and thought it was decent.

a lot of famous YouTube critics hate this, I can see why. but I didn't hate it though, it was decent. the tone was too serious and lacked any light hearted moments, Jake Johnson is known for comedy but failed to deliver. unlike the Mummy trilogy, not only did that one have great humour but it was fun with great action and special effects for its time in 99. therefore I like the first 3 more then this one. The Mummy 2017 was ok, didn't love it or hate it but wasn't overly impressed. the action and stunts were pretty good, had no funny moments and didn't work if they tried, kind of underwhelming. they tried to greats a Universal monsters universe with reboots The Wolfman and Dracula Untold and failed, now they are starting again with this one as the launching point.. and next we are meant to be getting The Invisible Man. we shall see how this shared universe works out.

would have been nice to be connected to the Brendan Frasier trilogy, the book of the dead did make an appearence.
