Myself and some of the other moderators have developed the following TVAus.com guidelines. These guidelines are designed to ensure everyone has a fun and enjoyable time on the board. A lot of them are just common sense, so don't feel worried about how many there are.

The moderators will be using these as kind of a like a reference. If you get a warning it will most likely be because you did not follow one of the below guidelines. Please remember you can get roughly 10 warnings before anything happens, so do not take warnings to heart, they are exactly that, just warnings.

All information that has not been seen on Australian Television sets is classified as spoilers. Please do not post them. Note If you are from WA please remember this is an East Coast based forum and therefore in the hours following a show you may be exposed to unwanted spoilers.

If you really want to discuss spoilers please use the threads marked spoiler threads, or use the square bracket spoiler quotes (see above spoiler button) to hide your text from users before you post. Violation of this rule can result in immediate banning.

DON'T TYPE POSTS IN ALL UPPER CASE, it's considered SHOUTING. DO NOT TYPE THREAD TITLES IN UPPER CASE.

Posting in red is considered an angry tone, use it with caution.

Use complete sentences with proper capitalization, spelling and punctuation.
- Under 18 specified threads are an exception.
- There is a spell check button to help you.
- I do know the irony of writing this guideline in a sentence that is grammatically incorrect.
- Some basic Internet shorthand is acceptable - For example wb (welcome back) lol (laughing out loud) rofl (rolls on floor laughing) fyi (for your information) imo (in my opinion), etc.

Please keep your signature to 5 lines or less. Large sig's, with pretty little text pictures only impress the new net user, and consume precious net resources. Which in turn makes life difficult for dial up users.

Added May 4 2005: A few simple rules regarding Avatars and Signature. Disregarding these rules can result in banning.

Avatar Size:
Avatar must not exceed 100x100 pixels

Signature Size:
No more than 5 lines of text. If using an offsite picture, it must not exceed 550 pixels long and 150 pixels high.

Signature & Avatar Content:
In line with TVAus Guidelines. Do not include material that can be considered abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or may violate any applicable laws. Do not post spam.

Added March 1 2010: Please do not include links in signatures to external sites. This includes Facebook, MySpace, and other personal sites. There is a thread in "The Water Cooler" where you may mention your site, but TVAus no longer allows any advertising of other websites on the open forum.

Please do not include signatures when you are posting in game threads. This is to keep the game flowing along nicely and quickly.

Please before posting a new thread do a search to ensure a same or similar thread does not exist already.

Added March 19 2007: When you are posting information from another source (newspaper, website etc) - you must quote your source and place the information into 'quotes' ([*quote] and [/*quote] without the *'s). This is due to intellectual property laws.

Do not post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may or may not violate any applicable laws. Do not post spam. Violation of these rules can result in immediate banning.

Use descriptive post subjects. People do not have time to click on every thread, so when posting a new thread make sure your subject field is relevant and informative. No swearing in post subjects.

Do not personally attack or target any members. They have a right to enjoy their time at tvaus hassle free just like you do.

At all times respect the moderators. When they make a decision do not get angry with them. They have a hard enough job as it is.

Try not to say anything to others that you would not say to them in person in a room full of people. Please remember that when you post a message on TVAus.com people all over the world can read your words.

Due to the enactment of the Suicide Related Material Offences Act, all discussion of suicide is now strictly prohibited from this forum and any posts on the topic will be deleted and may result in a permanent ban. For more information see http://www.tvaus.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=386540

Don't attack people--try to persuade them by presenting facts. Cursing and abuse only make people less willing to help when you need it. Personal abuse will not be tolerated. (This is especially important when two users have two extremely different view points). Violation of this rule can result in immediate banning.

Say what you have to say succinctly and it will have a greater impact. Remember that the longer you make your article, the fewer people will bother to read it.

Without the voice inflections and body language of personal communications, it's easy for remarks meant to be funny to be misinterpreted. Subtle humor tends to get lost. Take steps to make sure that people realize you are trying to be funny, i.e. use Wink or Smile emoticons. No matter how broad the humor or satire, it is safer to remind people that you are being funny. But also be aware that frequently satire is posted without explicit indications.

If an article outrages you strongly, maybe consider whether it is satire before flaming the user. Rather than reply in anger, report the post to the mods by using the blue report button.

And remember the final and most important rule is to adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
