Despite being one of the main parties to actually champion the franchise’s renewal, Producer and occasional-director Rob Cohen has backed out of “xXx 3 : The return of Xander Cage” – a project which would’ve reunited him with the original star, Vin Diesel – leaving the soon-to-lens project captain-less.

The reason for Cohen vacating his post? Something better came along.

Cohen, who directed the first “xXx” and “Fast and the Furious” films (also with Diesel), has signed a deal to helm an event-sized action film called “Medieval”, described as "The Magnificent Seven" in the Middle Ages.

New Regency, which will finance the film and distribute through Fox, acquired the spec script by Alex Litvak (“Predators”) and Michael Finch in an $800,000 against $1.6 million deal, says Variety.

Critic dartboard McG will be involved in a producing capacity. Cohen, who studied anthropology and European history at Harvard, said he was drawn by the opportunity to tap into the historical period and create a heightened reality with big action pieces. Regency has kept the script hush-hush, but sources said the action brings together warriors from disparate cultures.

"It was a tough decision about 'XXX,'" Cohen said. "I talked to Vin over the weekend and said I hoped they would wait, but that if they find another director who's right for the sequel, I certainly wouldn't be angry. But I could not let something like this go."[/quote:64e23623fb]

LatinoReview got their hands on the script for "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage," revealing the details of the plot without spoiling the entire movie. The site says that the film is incredibly generic and has endless cheesy one-liners. Read the plot summary below:

Ten nuclear warheads are stolen from a remote Russian province by a mysterious entity, which will later be revealed to be a former Russian billionaire named Alexi. He has lost most of his money and is now stealing warheads to sell them on the open market.

The same secret government agency, led by Agent Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), from the first film is able to locate Xander Cage (Diesel) after he defends himself and the crew of a ship, which is boarded by Somali-type pirates. Apparently, he find a Mercedes Benz on board and uses it to kill the bad guys.

Gibbons takes Cage to a holding cell where a man who looks exactly like Xander Cage is being held. That man is an international criminal known as "The End," who has ties with the Russian men responsible for stealing the nukes. Gibbons needs Cage to impersonate The End to get close to the Russians to find out where they are holding the missiles. (Example of cheesy line: When Cage meets The End, he asks him "Are you on Facebook?")

Cage and his gorgeous agency contact Emily head to a club in Russia to meet with Alexi's people. After he convinces them that he's The End, he and Emily begin their search for the nukes by traveling from country to country. Eventually, Emily is kidnapped by Alexi and Cage is fired from the agency for being reckless. As a result, Cage must save the girl and kill the bad guy.[/quote:a372e9d296]

Ericson Core has signed to helm "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage," Columbia's third installment in the action franchise. Vin Diesel is reprising the role of the extreme sports athlete-turned-government operative he originated in the 2002 movie directed by Rob Cohen.

Last year, Diesel and Cohen agreed to re-team for the new installment, but in June, Cohen segued to helm "Medieval" for Regency. Columbia went on the hunt for a helmer, who also had to get the OK from Diesel.

Core recently made his directorial debut on "Invincible," starring Mark Wahlberg. He was also the cinematographer on Diesel's 2001 film "The Fast and the Furious."

John Brancato and Michael Ferris (Terminator Salvation) wrote the script for "Xander Cage." It involves Cage's return to the National Security Agency after an eight-year absence. Richard Wilkes, who wrote the original movie, did a recent polish.

The studio hopes to begin production early next year.[/quote:a72079be82]

How ironic, I was just about to sit down and read the script for "XXX : The Return of Xander Cage" when an email flittered in from the guys at Cinefools advising me of a story they're running suggesting Vin Diesel is no longer attached to the film. Well, guess there goes my reason for reading the script - at least in a hurry (and can go back on the 'unproduced screenplays' pile - those without a must-read-by date on them due to their immobile nature).

Cinefools doesn't know why Diesel has pulled out of the flick, but speculates it may have something to do with Rob Cohen (the "XXX" director who roped back into the franchise) vacating his post as director recently. That wouldn't surprise me, especially since Cohen was probably half the reason Diesel agreed to reprise the role of Xander Cage in the first place (And Cohen's replacement, Ericson Core, isn't exactly a name that screams 'instant hit'). And no doubt it took some coaxing - and carrots - to get him back in the first place. But guessing the project wasn't going in a direction that pleased the big bald blockbusterer.

Still, what a waste of everyone's time and money, right? Even Diesel himself has been training since August to get into shape for the movie. The time spent prepping this one might've been better spent doodling love letters to Universal pleading them to make the second sequel to "Pitch Black", or even "Wheelman".

John Brancato and Michael Ferris ("Terminator Salvation") wrote the script for "Xander Cage." And from what I've heard, it's 'OK'.

Will the film happen without Diesel? Will Sony cough up some more bucks to try and entice Diesel back? Will anyone much care whether the film's made or not? (I'm guessing one person won't - Samuel L.Jackson. He's got more work on than an accountant in July).[/quote:3a114f6566]

We recently reported that director Rob Cohen (xXx, Fast and the Furious) left the third "xXx" installment even though Vin Diesel already signed on to star. Deadline is now reporting that Columbia Pictures (Sony) has abandoned the film, but Paramount Pictures stepped in to pick it up. The studio swap caused Cohen to change his mind and he is now set to direct "xXx 3."

"I left the project because I had a very strong instinct it would never get made at Sony, that it wasn't picking up the critical mass and traction that a movie needs," said Cohen. "For whatever reason, Paramount sees the future of this, and we're in a very positive place at a new home where there is genuine enthusiasm."

In the movie, Xander Cage (Diesel) is left for dead, but returns to execute a very difficult assignment that only he can pull off. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Agent Augustus Gibbons, Xander's handler. Most of the action takes place in Europe.

Diesel will star in the film as soon as he completes another installment in "The Fast and the Furious" franchise. The plan for "xXx 3" is to shoot it in 3D and release the film at the end of 2011.[/quote:49626549e3]

What''s with the 3D!! I'll probably see it at the cinema for the action sequences and closeups of Vin Diesel :shifty: and probably get it on Bluray for the same reasons :P

Ironically, if this is being filmed in 3D it will be better than being shot in 2D and converted... but I still wont see it! haha

Worst Previews wrote:Vin Diesel Says "XXX 3" Script is Almost Finished

Back in July, Vin Diesel took to his Facebook account to hint that he's planning to return as Xander Cage in a third "XXX" installment. And now, the actor revealed that the script for the new film is almost finished.

"As you know, the new 'XXX' script finally comes in next month," he wrote. "And just this morning people are suggesting Katy Perry as the new X girl. /smile"

Diesel is a big Katy Perry fans and can be seen dancing to her "Dark Horse" song on his Facebook page. Even though Perry has been very vocal about becoming an actress, it's not clear if she's truly considered for "XXX 3."

"XXX" was released in 2002 and grossed $277 million worldwide on a budget of $70 million. Diesel refused to return for the sequel, which is why he was replaced by Ice Cube. That sequel was only able to gross $71 million.
