TV Tonight wrote:Winners & Losers drama testing for feedback

Channel Seven is testing its drama pilot Winners and Losers with online sample groups.

As first revealed by TV Tonight, the drama centres around females, in this case a group of four, Bec, Jen, Frances, and Sophie who reunite after being invited to a school reunion by Tiffany Turner (Michala Banas, McLeod’s Daughters), a girl whom everyone once despised.

The group were the ‘losers’ back in school and taunted by Tiffany. After the reunion they purchase a lotto ticket and become winners (coincidentally a lottery win was the premise for Nine’s Chances, a set-up it soon abandoned for more outrageous plots).

Filmed in Melbourne, the pilot is said to include Virginia Gay (All Saints), Melanie Vallejo (Packed to the Rafters), Damien Bodie, Eliza Taylor-Cotter, and Blair McDonough (all from Neighbours) plus Francis Greenslade (Newstopia, The Micallef Program), Denise Scott (The 7PM Project), Lawrence Mooney (The White Room) and Scott McGregor (Temptation).

Testing of Pilots with audiences is certainly not new, and when your investment is as major as a new drama it makes a lot of sense.

This sounds interesting. A bit of a Desperate Housewives/Sex and the City style show, with a mix of winning the lottery. Also this would explain Blair McDonough on DWTS. Good to see Seven is giving these character style dramas a go, compared to Nine where its not so with Rescue Special Ops which imo is a blatent rip off of All Saints: Medical Response Unit. Be interesting to see where it goes anyway. The cast is a strong one so if the writing can be done right Seven could be on another winner.

Seven has now confirmed that Winners and Losers will go ahead for 2011

The Seven Network today confirmed its new drama series Winners and Losers (first tipped exclusively to readers in April) would air in 2011.

The drama, which looks at the lives of four best friends who were “losers” in high school and about to become “winners” ten years later, has been developed by Seven’s in-house drama team of Bevan Lee and John Holmes.

The Melbourne-made drama stars “Denise Scott as the matriarch of the Gross family and newcomers Zoe Tuckwell-Smith as faithful Bec, Melissa Bergland as loud and opinionated Jenny, Melanie Vallejo as the fit and feisty Sophie, and returning to Channel Seven is Virginia Gay as high powered workaholic Frances.”

They are joined by Blair McDonough, Damien Bodie and Francis Greenslade as Mr Gross.

The series is produced by former City Homicide producer MaryAnne Carroll.

I don't know the whole plot sounds very contrived. It's definately not something that has piqued my interests.

Should fit right in with the schedule then.

Home and away is no longer anything like the original concept, therefore also very contrived.

Bare bums and saucy TV

The new Aussie series that has shafted Packed to the Rafters off our screens till July is no Packed to the Rafters .
Winners & Losers, which takes over the 8.30pm Tuesday Rafters timeslot on Prime7 from next week, is clearly aimed at a younger audience than Rebecca Gibney’s cosy family drama.

Its racier content will probably shock the Rafters faithful, who have reacted strongly in the past to any raunch.

Within the first 30 seconds of the first episode of Winners & Losers we see a main character, Melanie Vallejo’s gym bunny Sophie, having sex in silky sheets, then showing her evidently underwhelming one-night stand the door.

Later she snorts cocaine in a toilet cubicle.

There’s also a gratuitous shot of Blair McDonough’s backside as the ex-Neighbours pin-up slips into a bath with co-star Zoe Tuckwell-Smith.

Created by Rafters creator Bevan Lee, Winners & Losers follows the fortunes of four former high school friends, now all 27, who reunite at their 10-year school reunion.

The show is at times corny and clunky but has winning touches of comic whimsy as the girls – social outcasts in their teen years – relive the torment they suffered at the hands of a school bully.

Ex-All Saints actress Virginia Gay and TV newcomer Melissa Bergland join Vallejo and Tuckwell-Smith in the lead roles.

Prime7 and feeder network Seven have high hopes for Winners & Losers , as the bold decision to drop it into the Rafters timeslot shows.

While it has little hope of pulling the 2million viewers a week that Rafters averages, the new series has pluck and promise and may woo younger female audiences with its Sex and the City -esque cheek.

Sounds like "Winners" will be a lot more adult than "Rafters" and more female-skewed.

Apparently "Rafters" is taking a mid-season break! and will most likely be back after "Winners" finishes its season.
