The Seven Network have acquired the Olympic Games for 2016, 2018 and 2020. Reported to just under $200m. Big question is will they have enough cash to stump up for the AFL, Australian Open, Melbourne Cup and other sporting events they currently have when the time comes?

TV Tonight wrote:Report: Seven secures Olympics until 2020

The Olympic Games will return to Seven until 2020 under a new deal with the IOC according to media reports today.

Seven will broadcast the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020 plus the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, News Corp reports.

Nine and TEN are reported to have withdrawn from bidding, allowing Seven to secure the Games for less than $200 million -lower than the anticipated $250m.

Networks have previously spoken about their interest in local and annual sports rather than pricey events. Timezones for Rio were also cited as a consideration, although Tokyo will be more in sync with Australian times.

Seven Chairman Kerry Stokes, recently spotted watching the tennis at Wimbledon, is understood to have participated in the deal.

Seven last broadcast the Games in Beijing in 2008, with Nine / Foxtel securing London Olympics and TEN screening the Sochi Winter Games.

The Rio Olympics are locked in for August 5 to 21, 2016.

In another coup for the Seven Network, they have secured the rights to the next Commonwealth Games to be hosted on the Gold Coast! Its a big win for the network after recently picking up The Olympics and now the Commonwealth Games. The big question i have is will they have enough money left to go after the AFL, NRL and other major sporting events like the Melbourne Cup and Australian Open tennis in the future?

News Ltd wrote:Seven Network pays $40 million for the exclusive media rights to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

KERRY Stokes’ Seven Network has shelled out about $40 million for the exclusive media rights to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

The deal continues Seven’s sport rights spree, following its $170 million acquisition of three Olympics from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Seven chief executive Tim Worner said there was “nothing like a home Games to get Australians excited”.

Under the deal, which includes all digital rights, Seven will pay about $10 million more than the $30 million Network Ten forked out for the recent Glasgow Games.

Nine paid about $50 million for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006.

Mr Worner, a former Seven programming chief, said he remembers the drawing power of the Melbourne Games.

“We (Seven) had three of the top shows at the time in Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Lost, but Australians tuned in to Melbourne,’’ he said.

Seven is focused on winning the rights to more live sports and showed with its recent acquisition of the American football’s NFL that it believes there is value in niche sports.

Mr Worner said Seven would look at negotiating with pay-TV channel Fox Sports to sell off some of the Commonwealth Games rights.

But he said Seven’s two additional digital channels as well as the forthcoming launch of Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV meant the broadcaster may in the future use big event sports rights entirely for its own platforms.

Mr Stokes, the Seven chairman, said the Olympics and Commonwealth partnerships would play “a key role in defining and building our media presence” over the next decade.

Gold Coast Organising Corporation chairman Nigel Chamier said Seven’s involvement was a major boost to the iconic event.

The acquisition means Seven’s sporting line up in 2018 will kick off with the Australian Open tennis, roll into the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea and the Commonwealth Games before settling into the AFL schedule.

TV Tonight wrote:Seven signs Rio 2016 Paralympic Games

Seven has secured the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016, adding to its Olympic Games suite.

Seven’s agreement with the Australian Paralympic Committee includes broadcast television, subscription television, online, Hybrid Broadband Broadcast Television and radio broadcasting rights across multiple devices.

Seven will screen 14 hours a day of live coverage on broadcast television across the network’s digital broadcast platform.

Kerry Stokes, Chairman of Seven West Media, said: “We are honoured to be the network of the Paralympic Games in Rio. We are proud of our long partnership with the IOC and the Olympic movement, and we look forward to our partnership with the International Paralympic Committee and the Australian Paralympic Committee.

Tim Worner, CEO of Seven West Media, added: “We are delighted to be able to bring this extraordinary event to all Australians. The Paralympic Games take sports to a new level, they inspire and we take with great pride our responsibility to provide the Games to all Australians across all forms of delivery platforms.”

Glenn Tasker, Chairman of the Australian Paralympic Committee, said: “This is an historic day for the Australian Paralympic movement. We are very proud to welcome the Seven Network as our first ever commercial broadcast partner for the Paralympic Games and we are equally excited about the opportunity we now have to share the stories of Australia’s Paralympic athletes.

“The APC is confident that the quality and depth of Paralympic coverage provided by the Seven Network will set a new standard for the Paralympic movement, not just during the 12 days of competition, but for the 18 months leading up to the Games. The Seven Network has embraced the Paralympic ideals and we will do everything we can to ensure our new partnership plays an important role in shaping community perceptions of people with disabilities.”

Previously the Paralympics were screened in Australia on ABC.

Mark Scott, ABC managing director, said, “The ABC is proud of the role we have played in growing a strong audience for the Paralympic Games so there is genuine competition from the commercial networks and money to broadcast them.

“We are sorry to see them go but we wish the games and its athletes well for Rio and beyond.”
