[quote66][b66]McGuire eyes top job at Nine[/b66]
[i66]By Lisa Murray
January 19, 2006[/i66]

TELEVISION personality Eddie McGuire has his eyes on the top job at the Nine Network and is reportedly being considered for the role by acting chief Sam Chisholm.

Rumours about Mr McGuire's push into management have been circulating since May, when Nine's then boss, David Gyngell, quit the post suddenly, citing interference from management.

The speculation picked up again this month after Nine missed out on the Australian Football League broadcasting rights for 2007 to 2011. Mr McGuire hosts Nine's The Footy Show and is president of Collingwood Football Club.

"He's been pushing very hard for the top job," a source close to Nine said yesterday, adding that while it could work "it would be a risky appointment".

Australia's biggest media buyer, Harold Mitchell, said Mr McGuire would be a good choice as the new Nine CEO.

"He's a great communicator, enormously competent and very ambitious," Mr Mitchell said yesterday. "I've seen him in action with advertisers, politicians and industry leaders and he's very good."

Mr McGuire was unavailable for comment yesterday. Nine has repeatedly said it was in no hurry to fill the top position at the network, as Mr Chisholm's two-year contract runs until May next year.

Mr McGuire became co-host of Nine's The Footy Show in 1994 and is also host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Meanwhile, the executive producer of Channel Nine's Sunday program, John Lyons, was replaced yesterday after a long-running battle with management over budget issues.

Mr Lyons, a former editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and an award-winning journalist, told associates he was unhappy about the decision but a spokeswoman for Nine said he was still in discussions about an ongoing role at the network.

The move surprised some Nine staffers because of Mr Lyons's close relationship with John Alexander, chief executive of Nine's parent, Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd.[/quote66]

Nobody can stand him, that's the thing. The only one who could was the Packer-clan... and woe-betide to anyone else who disagrees!
