Speculation and rumours about the official release of the coveted iPhone have been gaining momentum for month. But the first official word indicates that Australian resellers have been contacted by Apple and have been told the following:

- Last week of June release
- More than 1 carrier
- No contract lock in
- Current Apple resellers will be able to sell iPhones

This ties in nicely with the release of the iPhone 2.0 software update and the opening of the flagship Apple Store in Sydney in June.

Also, Telstra is the only 2.5G (EDGE) carrier in Australia, and would be the only candidate for the current version phone. So the fact that the iPhone will not be tied to a specific carrier in Australia could mean a 3G version will be released, allowing it to run on all networks, including Optus, Vodafone, 3, Virgin Mobile and Telstra.

Where's the option for 'I have a phone and a non-Apple digital audio player, and don't really care much for the iPhone, but I don't hate Apple'? :shifty:
I wonder how much it'll cost here.

I would LOVE an iPhone, but sense it will be out of my price range.

I thought the release wouldn't be until next year?

Ive been holding out for this for 4 years, my current phone is out of date. Hopefully they don't overcharge us because it is Apple branded.

A few of my friends already have one, they obtained it overseas and cracked the secret code. It looks very good and has many good functions.

With 3G it will be much better , IIRC the 3G one is scheduled to be released in the next month or so in the states.

Thats because our laws regrading anti-competitive behavior apparently.

Personally I won't be buying one (but people are free to gift it to me), i would still prefer a proper PDA-Smartphone personally, they do the same but don't cost as much usally.

I'll definitely be upgrading to a 3G version when its released. I love my current iPhone, but 3G would just take it to the next level!

It's great having everything all in once device. Its not perfect, but its definitely an excellent glimpse of things to come from Apple.

Plus, they'd be shutting out a huge market of potential buyers in the already tiny market which is Australia. Not to mention our carriers suck, they're overpriced. Any exclusivity would mean users would be tied to incredibly expensive plans, which would deter any potential buyers.

This "more than 1 carrier" business model will encourage competition and force phone plan prices down (which can only be a good thing for Australians).

I can't wait! I really hope its a 3G iPhone.

You have an iPod touch right? I can just mail you one of my old Nokias from high school. Just sticky tape it to the back or something.

Anything over $20 these days is out of my price range. So basically anything from the toy section of target might be okay. Besides that, I barely use my phones. I know it's more than a phone, but I have a computer, MP3 player and NDS that do the other stuff anyway. I'm still curious about it though. :shifty:
