As you can all now see ... The Rant Space is now open for business.

So, let me get this started.

My Rant

I am sick and tired of the daily news stories about the two convicted drug smugglers currently on death row in Bali.

When a person travels overseas we all know that in some countries the possession or trafficking of drugs is a death sentence. They knew what they were getting themselves in to and now they must pay the penalty.

There are currently, at least, 24 other Australian's on death rows around the world and we are not hearing diddly about them.

Now, as soon as I see their image on screen I turn over to something else.

If you do the crime be prepared to suffer the consequences.

I want to know how the news cycle makes people forget or water down the significance of events

I speak of the victims of the Sydney siege at Martin Place

In no time at all it felt like an event that "happened but never happened", when historically the event had more ramifications than what people gave it credit for

Granted people were cynical when it was disclosed that the victims negotiated 1 and a half million dollars to tell their stories to tv networks, but nobody was forcing us to watch the interviews, this was merely a case of people being in the wrong place at wrong time, and: who are we to judge them?

Rather people are too concerned about getting rid of a prime minister (which never happened) and a movie like 50 shades of grey breaking box office records

There is a huge amount of rallying going on to save those two guys in Bali. My partner said when he drove through Maroubra Junction yesterday there were people holding up placards saying vote to save.

I'm swerved towards not executing them.

if there is one thing you can take away from the news headlines talking about the bali nine drug smuggling, it shows the liberal side to Australia with regards to its view to the death penalty

Both conservatives and progressives are strangely... on the same side with regards to the issue, saying capital punishment is not the answer / deterrent to the initial crime.

Regardless, Im not sure if it makes an iota of difference in the end. What more? Theres talk about how these guys were just the smugglers, not the king pins, and how there was a conspiracy that the drug kingpins provide plenty of economy and infrastructure to that part of the world ... but thats drawing a long bow

Sure people make mistakes - but there are "mistakes" and then there are "premeditated evil criminal activities". Drug running is the latter.
Indonesia has never hidden the consequences for drug runners.
They were greedy and stupid enough to play the game and lost.
Apparently they forced the others in the group to carry, by threatening their families.

No sadness here. Karma is a bitch.

(Keeping them in prison for 10yrs seems like a waste of time and money - but prisoners in the US can be on death row for 20yrs.)
