Yes, I would say the death of Nelson Mandela is number 1.

North Korea missile threats, George Zimmerman trial, Boston Marathon Bombings make the list too.

In sport i think the 3 big stories were the Lance Armstrong drug admission, The Essendon saga and of course the Sharks saga too.

I do agree about Nelson Mandela though. That was the biggest story. Others for me were NSW bushfires and the royal baby but there was so many. It was such a shocking year in news good and bad.
