This morning, we find out who has been successful in their bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Will it be Hambantota, in Sri Lanka; or will it be Australia's own Gold Coast?

The winner is .........................

Gold Coast!!

I think the final result was Gold Coast (43 votes) defeated Hambantota (27 votes). Should be a great Games in 2018.

Good news ... I was going to ask how can a region be a host city. I did not realise Gold Coast is a city with its own council but the when investigating I do find that there is no physical place called Gold Coast. It is a region that has some how been designated a city without its own post code.

Anyways ... it will be good for business in the gold coast area.

Starts planning my 2018 vacations :)

Its good news but then again it'll only be 2 games between Australia hosting it in Melbourne. I know why we were chosen in the end because we were considered the safe option over Sri Lanka after the India debacle but still.

Now the bidding war will begin on who broadcasts them.

i didn't even know that Gold Coast was in the running for the Games. When it was announced that they'll be hosting, at first, thought '''WHAT?"", but then read a few articles and then thought ''cool'. lol .

Good luck to the ''city'' for the 2018 Games. Hope they do it well.

Me too. I volunteered at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and had a blast doing it; but I think I might just attend some events when the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games come around. Plenty of time to save up for it. :P

I know... it's amazing how many Aussies think that. When you live in the SE QLd region, it's just a known fact.

The Gold Coast has a multitude of suburbs that pretty much merge with each other... so it's very a suburban environment, until you move further out into the hinterland region. There has been a lot of sporting infrastructure built in the past few years and there is a light rail project currently underway...

The Logan City Council (yet again, not a physical place, but a region) is just up the motorway & then you're straight into the Brisbane area. Will be interesting to see where all the planned events will be staged...
